Highlights from Streatham Festival 2016

The Streatham Festival from the 2nd to the 9th July 2016 was bigger and better than ever before.  It showcased the best of local talent in wonderful and varied venues.

I was able to support the festival organisers with some assistance from fellow local photographers Ajit, Helena and Maisy in capturing the events that took place as part of ‘Streatham Festival does Photography’.  This included …

West End Show Tunes were performed at The Rookery at Streatham Common by a great 5 piece.  Prosecco corks were being popped and parakeets flew overhead on a warm summers evening whilst everyone enjoyed some great music.

On the Friday, it was off to the British Home where Will Rutter had assembled a fusion of very different acts for the Folk of the Wood’s Festival Ceilidh (kay-lee).

There were a mixture of musicians playing in the main theatre hall and chapel.  Latin spirit was there with flamenco music and dancing with La Morenita, Polish folk dancing bringing amazing fun and energy with Orleta.  Throughout was wild dancing with all those in attendance joining in.   Bringing the evening to a crescendo was Jah Screechy who had young, old and even infirm on their feet with reggae hits.    A great night!

Taken from the Camden Crawl but being south of the river (and better) this was the fourth year for The Strut and it was a year that really found its stride.  A music gig trail over one night in  Streatham on 9th July featuring music for all tastes, including:

  • electro-soul from All the People
  • Helen McDonald & Future Groove with their jazz, funk, soul combo
  • DB5s with 60’s and 70’s classics
  • Elton John tribute who wasn’t so much a doppelgänger for Elton but could have been the man himself
  • Hipster Ray, a ska punk band
  • Likeminded Fools – a band truly like no other.  It was missing a washboard player but didn’t miss any of the zany theatrics whilst the trio being excellent musicians.

Back at The British Home, this time for a fete type event for the Family Fun Day.  Local stallholders, live acts, exotic pets, food galore to name a few items to entertain the crowds.  The weather was with us and to bring further sunshine, Chuka Umunna also made a guest appearance.

Looking forward to next Streatham Festival 2017!
